"The General opinion is that in mordern times no nation can develop without power. Not just any power. We are talking about power supply 24 hours every single day of the year. This feat has eluded Nigeria for some time. It has not been a question of wether the nation can afford it, but wether the Nigerian government can commit itself to such a simple feat."
Those were the words of a concerned citizen. Speaking at the commissioning of the Olorunsogo Gas Turbine Power Station Phase One Project in Papalanto, in Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State recently Nigeria’s former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo said that government has taken a bold step in ensuring that power became the cornerstone of his regime, adding that very soon Nigerians would start feeling the impact of regular power supply in their house hold and business environment, according to him a country without an adequate supply of power cannot attain economic enhancement while also stating that posterity would judge the tenure of his regime. We are still waiting. Alright, let give it some time. ok? The plant, which cost a total of US$220 million (about N29 billion) which is expected to add 335mw to the grid, was sponsored under a special arrangement of 35 percent direct payment by the Federal Government and 65 percent bilateral credit facility from the Export Import Bank of China (EXIMB). Earlier, the former president has commissioned Geregu thermal power station in Kogi State with a generating capacity of 414 MW and Omotosho thermal power station in Ondo with a generating capacity of about 335MW, while the ground breaking for the commencement of the phase two has also commenced. About two weeks ago, Obasanjo had also commissioned the first phase of Ibom Power Plant in Akwa Ibom with a 190 MW capacity Besides, Obasanjo explained that when conceiving the idea of setting up different power plants across the country, the challenges that bedeviled the administration were enormous but added that it is a worthy project at the end of the day because the impact of the generating plants on the economy would accelerate the desired business status the country deserves. 'If after 12 months, with all these turbines generating so much power, we are still faced with acute power shortage, then something is horribly wrong', our concerned citizen concluded.
