Top leadership caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was reported to have commenced moves to upstage percieved arrangements by former President Olusegun Obasanjo to continue to wield influence on the government of President Umar Musa Yar Adua.
Close sources to the caucus, made up largely by members of the Board of Trustees of the Party, revealed yesterday that the caucus met severally in the last four days to identify every area of influence that could impede the new President from functioning well. It was learnt that one of the decisions of the caucus was to ensure that Senator David Mark is not allowed to emerge as the Senate President today. It was learnt that final plans on the stoppage of Senator Mark was concluded at a meeting held in Abuja Sunday night. “It was a good meeting. I think with what happened the tide may change against the interest of the former President and once this is done, we are going to move for the amendment of the party’s constitution,” one of the sources said. Meanwhile former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is billed to return to Nigeria on Thursday June 14, 2007. Alhaji Abubakar had traveled out Nigeria shortly before the May 29, 2007 hand-over ceremony to obtain medical attention for his torn ligament.
