Vice President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has said that the Federal Government has developed a new focus for the Oil and Gas Industry which stresses the need to carry the community along in all decision making, as well as ensuring that they are made part owners of the business.
Speaking when he received a delegation from the community led by its paramount ruler, His Royal Highness, Dr. Yibo Buowari-Brown in the State House today, the Vice President said “The issue relating to the Oil and Gas Industry is well known. This is why government has now developed a new focus. The industry must carry along the community and the community must be part of the business.” The Vice President also expressed the appreciation of government to the Finima Community for providing land for the building of the LNG saying, “The Community is strategic to the oil industry. For a people to be uprooted from their land and resettled elsewhere is a major sacrifice. People are naturally attached to their land, so I wish to thank you for your actions. Without your cooperation, it would have been very difficult to achieve the dream of LNG project.” The Vice President also told the delegation that the company will henceforth be responsive to the need of the community, warning however that it would take some time before total adjustment to this new thinking becomes fully operational. He assured that the decision to allocate the said piece of land for the project would never be a source of regret to them. Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Dr. Buowari – Brown said they were on the State House to express the happiness of the community over the Peace Initiative and Master Plan for the Niger Delta developed by the Federal Government and also to request that the Vice President use his good office to intervene in resolving some of the problems being faced by the community. In another development, The Vice President told the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. XU Jiangue who paid a courtesy visit to his office today, that the Federal Government is satisfied with the cordial relation which exists between both countries. He noted that this state of affairs could only be as a result of mutual respect between China and Nigeria. Dr. Jonathan also commended the role being played by Chinese companies and nationals in the Nigerian Oil and Gas sector, assuring that government has adopted some measures that will ensure the emergence of total and comprehensive peace needed for economic development of the Niger Delta.
