I was prompted to write this article as a result of the tears in the eyes of many prospective students of Ebonyi State University (EBSU). This issue has caused many to spend their last fortune for what they don’t know yet others hold the strong belief that it is inevitable to gain admission into Ebonyi State University (EBSU) without the payment of “Concessional Fee” as a non-indigene.

This brings me to join others to ask “What is Concessional fee?” According to the sixth Edition of the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, page 235, the word “Concession” from which “Concessional” was derived means “Something that you allow or do, or allow somebody to have in order to end an argument or to make a situation less difficult”. But how is this applicable to the “Concessional Fee” being paid in Ebonyi State University (EBSU) for courses such as Medicine/Surgery, Medical Laboratory Science, Nursing, Law, Marketing only to mention but a few. I think the world at large needs a reasonable and explanatory answer from the staffs of Ebonyi State University (EBSU) on the contextual meaning of the term “Concessional Fee”.

Many students have complained of being denied admission despite their good grades in O’level and a good score in UME or PRE-DEGREE programme and as an indigene, I feel uncomfortable with such situations. If there is a provision for a student to pay certain fee for admission aside the tuition fee, it should not be as high and exorbitant as what is being paid for Medicine/Surgery which is Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N 500,000) and other courses which fall within the range of Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (N 250,000) to One Hundred Thousand Naira (N 100, 000).

I strongly believe that if the issue of “Concessional Fee” is checked by the National Universities Commission (N.U.C) or by any appropriate Government body, it will encourage students to study. Therefore, I urge the staffs of Ebonyi State University (EBSU) to give us understandable explanations concerning the “Concessional Fee”.

I urge those who feel concerned about this issue of “Concessional Fee” in Ebonyi State University (EBSU) to join in the fight to stop the payment of “Concessional Fee” in Ebonyi State University.

I hope to update my readers as soon as we get the full contextual meaning of the word “Concessional Fee” from the staffs of Ebonyi State University (EBSU). Remain bless as you wait to hear from me soon.

Mr.
Hello,
i have read the articles above written by Kalu.i am satisfied by his words.you see,i am an Indigine of Ikwo in Ebonyi state and i know about what he had stated here.it is a deficulty one to every one who would have love to study in our state.we need outsiders to come and join us over the and possibly make the state grow in development and every other ways.i want to suppot Kalu's note that the N.U.C should do some thing to correct this issue in the Ebonyi state University so that the academy can grow in learning and have a mutual well regarded graduate in the Institute to help Nigeria develope...thanks for your note and i hope things should be done fast to correct this quickly.it is not good for a student to pay so much money of about 500000 naira in admission alone.it is too bad.regards....

INDIGENE OF EBONYI DESERVED THE BEST
It is quite unfortunate that even the indegenous students of Ebonyi State are complaining. What is the essence of them owing University if the cannot be considered when registering others. It sounds embarrassing because I personally residents in Lagos State been an educationist and computer analyst I know what the world looks like and I know what is happening herein Lagos. You can hardly see anybody from Lagos State that is denied of Admission in Unilag or Lasu, never. I know quite alright that others from neigbouring states are gaining admission in Ebonyi State University simply because they are financially bounyant. Our so called Lecturers and Admin Officers have been demonized by the spirit of money forgetting that some of them passed through these hardship that some students are presenting facing. I oblige the Ebonyi State Ministry of Education to take care of this situation. Because Education is everything now in Nigeria. If you come to Lagos State you discover that it is Ebonyi State indegenes that are still hawking around. Some of them have excellent O Level results but financially handicaped. The Tuition fees or whatever should be reduced for them. Please Help our people to reduce their sufferings.

GOVERNMENT SHOULD COME FOR HELP
I is obvious that things are happening like this in Ebonyi State University. I am a computer analyst and work in a cyber cafe. I have been checking jamb result for candidates and to my greatest surprise is only 2% out of 100% that applied to EBSU because of the rate of crime in giving admission. EBSU need students from other neigbouring state to civilize and develop their state. It is very bad to collect Concessional Fee”. from student that merited their admission. You people should act fast before you will loose many student to would like to put your school as their choice.
Government please look into this matter and stop this corruption. student are our future hope for our country.
Thanks

how long will tribalism continue to affe
This article brings to light the modern day oppresion of students in nigeria. Frankly speaking, i think students who merit any course should be considered first before any other person whether indegene or non-indegene.As for the concessional fee, that is exthortion of money from people because some parents in the bid to send their children to school couldv become debtors. Please {asuu} i urge you to look seriously into this issue and bring it to an end, not only ebsu necessarily, but the entire universities in nigeria.

i will like to comment on why the form for 2008/2009 pre degree form is not on-line.students who are not living nearby should be given the chance to fill the form on-line.

Through the supplimentary
My question is,what about students that made their UME results, had good grades in thier O'level, but did not in any way put EBSU as thier first choice or even Second choice of school, and i ask is their a chance for such students through the supplimentary whereby the school thinks that a DPT or two needs to be filled up or needs awareness of the public.

icould have been a medical doctor today
hi, i am a graduate of EBSU, microbiology dept.
i wish to say that i was delayed admission in the college of medicine in 2000. only because of #100 000 concessional fees. well i do not hold any grief against anybody either the indegenes nor the non indegenes. i am happy today that i graduated in another dept, i know that i will be what ever God wants me to be,but i have to say that we should watch our personal values. how can this concessional fess get to #500,000. in a space of 7yr. too bad, for our values. soon or later we will produce doctors that will only think about #500,000. pls send my congratulatory message to my colleagues and my set who just finished their final MBBS, on weds. so i could have been a medical doctor today if not concessional fees
