Asari Dokubo It looks like President Yar'Adua would like to release Asari Dokubo, the detained leader of the Niger Delta Volunteer force. He needs a damn good excuse to do that though. How about release, on health grounds. The President is said to be considering the release of the detained militant leader because of his deteriorating health.
Governor of Bayelsa state, Timipre Sylva, who addressed state House correspondents at the end of a three hour meeting between the President and the governors of Bayelsa, Rivers and Delta state in his office, was reported as saying: “Well, they (the Militants) have been making a lot of demands. And of course Asari Dokubo right now is not feeling too well. From what we hear he is sick, and they are just trying to demandh is release on the basis of health, which I think is okay. Yes, we discussed that and I think there is progress been made there too” Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari (born 1964), formerly Dokubo Melford Goodhead Jr., is a major political figure of the Ijaw ethnic group in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. He was president of the Ijaw Youth Council for a time beginning in 2001 and later founded the Niger Delta People's Volunteer Force which would become one of the most prominent armed groups operating in the Niger Delta region. Asari is also an outspoken admirer of Osama bin Laden, with whom, it is alleged, he has financial links.
