Have you been to the cementary where our beloved are laid to rest? How does it look like? What is the environmental situation at the the cementary you visited?

On Friday, November 2nd, it will be All Souls Day. A day set aside in Christiandom to pray and remember our beloved ones who have departed this sinful, poverty nation of ours. For the righteous who lived and died in Christ they may be hoping for a better life in the kingdom of God, where there is no poverty, Hiv, Aids, hunger, robbery, electricity blackout. All things exist in a perfect world.

On Friday 26th October, 2007, I was at a public cementary in Benin-City, located between 1st and 2nd East Circular road of the ancient city, I think the cementary is managed by Oredo Local Government, the center of universe in the Heartbeat state.

The journey to the cementary began at the central hospital Mortuary. A day to the burial of our departed sister, we have visited the various Accounts Department of the hospital to settle all necessary bills, obtained a death certificate to enable us obtain burial permit by the council. As early as 8.am, family and friends were assembled at the mortuary gate, we came with our casket and ambulance. In less than one hour, all burial rituals were completed and we departed in a little convoy to the evil forest.

At the cementary, five shallow graves have already been dug awaiting righteous customers.

The Pentecostal pastor was sight to render hymns and choruses calling on the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Angels to descend and carry the body soul of our departed sister to heaven. He reminded us of our Lords coming as recorded in the first letter of St. Paul to the Thessalonians chapter 4, 13-17, Paul says my brothers, we want you to know the truth about those who have died, so that you will not be sad, like those who have no hope.

We believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will take us back with Jesus those who have died believing in him. We, who are a life on the day the Lord comes, will not go ahead of those who have died. There will be the shout of command, the archangels’ voice, the sound of Gods trumpet, and the Lord himself will come down from heaven. Those who have died, believing in Christ, will rise to life first, and then, we who are living at that time will be up along with them in the clouds to meet the lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord.

After the exhaustion, the casket was lowered with white linen to earth and covered. The pastor rendered choruses and prayed for the repose of the death. Any visitor to the Benin cemetery especially the second cemetery will weep for the dead. The wild and overgrown awolowo or elephant grases, reptiles of various species. My view and thinking is that cemetery as a final home for our departed and loved ones should be reasoning is that a person coming to this cemetery is already on the gateway to hell fire because of the poor environment. I think this may be the reason while many people prefer to be buried in their compound in this part of the country.

Whose responsibility is it to maintain the public commentaries – The 4th schedule of 1999 Nigerian constitution section 1c, list out the functions of Local Government to include establishment and maintenance of cemeteries, burial grounds, and homes for destitute and in firms. Are our councils living up to these expectations?
