TELEVISION viewers are looking forward to the eviction of one celebrity among the 10 currently in the  race to be the top dancer in the ongoing television reality dance contest tagged Celebrity Takes 2, this Sunday. The show is packaged by Spirit of David and sponsored by Skye Bank.

Last Sunday, the celebrities all put up a good outing, an improvement on their last outing the other week. In a rather tightly packaged show monitored on the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, network belt, the viewer was held in a grip right from the beginning of the one-hour show.

The comperes left no one in doubt as to the readiness of the celebrities to showcase the new tricks they may have learnt from their dance instructors in the last one week.

Hip hop act Sound Sultan was first performer. Alongside Lilian, the duo thrilled the audience and
television viewers alike to an about three minutes of energetic hip hop dance steps. Their steps however began to falter towards the tail end of their performance perhaps due to exhaustion.

The three judges commended  their effort but one drew attention to the lack of cohesion at the end of the dance.

If designer Zizi Cardow told anybody that what she did on stage with Ice on Sunday was ballet, then she must have reinvented that form of dance. Anyway, for her person, that dance with a lot of grace suits her just fine. She however performed with a lot of finesse what looked like the ballet dance she did.

One had expected that Tara as the name suggested would do justice to a dance from the Niger Delta region especially one performed by Asu Ekiye, but with her instructor, Edet (another Niger Deltan), they could not exhibit the flow of riverine dances.

Going by their names, Tara may be from Bayelsa or Rivers State and Edet from Cross River or Akwa Ibom, where graceful dances, especially with the hip line is always a delight to watch. One did not see the grace, in fact, she did everything but a dance from the Niger Delta area.

Sarah Boulos, one of the judges noticed some of the flaws in the dance. But Tara deserves some commendation for her costume and the zeal with which she went about her performance.
Mr. Nigeria, Bryan and Lovette did their best to keep up the tempo just like R & B act Nomorloss and Folake.

However the duo of Normorloss and Folake could not transfer the patriotism they exhibited in the inscriptions on their jackets into the dance steps. That is why Sarah Boulos’ excitement as she commented on their performance came to many as a surprise.

Boulous was unduly excited as she showered praises on the dancers, perhaps she saw what others did not see.  Television presenter Funlola Aifoyebi and her male instructor Bimbo had one of the best  performances on last Sunday’s show. They displayed a lot of versatility, cohesion and energy. Their sense of judgement and accuracy is a plus to their act. One cannot but agree with one of the judges who said  Aifoyebi had improved so much that she could pass for her instructor. Omowunmi and Funke tried to reinvent Salsa by bringing in some Nigerian dance steps. It worked.

Fuji star Pasuma Wonder and Funke drew a loud ovation from the crowd, maybe because of his personality definitely not because of his dance.  He however showed some flashes of skill but for most of the time his performance lasted, Pasuma Wonder was stiff-legged. But he should be commended for not all fuji artistes could do what Pasuma is currently doing now.

Movie producer and actor Kunle Afolayan, son of late producer Ade Afolayan, showed how one could be double-legged. The producer of AMAA award winning movie Irapada performed hip hop dance. His appropriate hip costume  was the only thing one could take away from his act. If after three weeks with an instructor, Afolayan is still dancing like this, then he must have entered the contest a wooden leg.

Actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde and her instructor Buddy were also a delight to watch. Last week, she
performed hip hop, but her act on Sunday was an interpretation of a soulful song of a runaway groom.
She brought her acting experience to bear on the short performance, a development that provoked an out flow of emotion.

One person will leave the Skye Bank’s Celebrity Takes 2 this week. Viewers will have the opportunity to find out on NTA on Sunday, October 28 at 2pm and Silverbird at 8pm same day.
