Last Monday at about 2am, about six huge armed men pounced on the door of a friend and neighbour at my residence at the Airport road, Abuja. After they had gained entry, one of them pointed a gun at the head of the occupant and asked for any of the following: handset, cash, gold, diamond, laptop and any other handy but lucrative material. By the time they left Emeka’ house at about 2:30am, they had become proud owners of a laptop, forty thousand naira, three set of handset and a few gold trinkets. Poor Emeka, this was not the first time, the bad boys would be visiting him.

In fact there is a temptation to assume that it was the same boys who visited him November, last year when he was preparing for his wedding that launched a come back attack. Then, they had made away with the sum of sixty thousand naira, gold and other valuables which were meant for Emeka’s prospective wife. Well, that Monday, the boys felt that Emeka’ property had not made their day yet; and one of them headed for his immediate neighbor’s apartment. But unlike Emeka, this guy, who incidentally was another neighbour and a closer friend, saw them advancing; he got scared to his bones and like a kid who was seeing a masquerade for the first time in his life, shouted at the top of his voice in all the languages that sought solace on his tongue: “ole, barau, onye ore, oyi, thieves”.

One of the “night visitors” appeared to be was so embarrassed and shocked that his would-be host could disturb the quietude of the neighborhood, simply because he saw some bad boys at his doorstep; so forced Ahmad’s weak door open with a single kick and began to search for him desperately.  Ahmad would have been dead, had he not hidden behind a door in his kitchen. Despite threats by the intruder that he would blow open the head of Ahmad’s wife (who was pleading profusely) if the man who blew the alarm was not produced immediately, Ahmad refused to surrender and the wife refused to reveal his hide out. Looked like Ahmad’s shout had some effects, after all, the neighbouhood started making silent but frantic calls, and when the bad boys got the hints,  they   just abandoned their project and vamoosed.

You want to ask about the Police? I don’t know, I leant they came to the rescue of the poor victims 24-hours after the visitors left. The essence of this story is that the bad boys are here again. From Lagos, Port Harcourt, Kano to Maiduguri, they are around trying to rob as much as they can before the coming celebration. Mber months are usually like this, where they dare the nights and harass innocent, hardworking Nigerians just to show their loved ones that they have arrived. We have got to be more security conscious as a people and fight this gang.

The Police or government is supposed to be our guard, but we often times find them coming to our rescue at the wrong time, or not coming at all. Ahmed has not been sleeping in the house. Too scared. He and about twenty other guys in the area have resorted to guarding themselves, keeping night vigil incase the boys return. Not that they would be a match though, because the most powerful weapon being wielded by the group was a piece of rod, which could easily drop from the wielder’s hand on the penetration of a single bullet carried by the robbers. But the good thing is that there was determination and resolve never to cave in so cheaply to these robbers.

We can’t do alone, however, but it is a fact that where the police pretend to have too much before them, we can’t only complicate our matters by relying on them. Robbers love silence and quietude more than we the ordinary human beings. A lot of the robbers now on the face of this country, seems to me to be perennial ones, who come out with the approach of Christmas, Sallah and the New Year. We can work hard to checkmate them, at least for now. They would go underground, after sometime.
