No matter how much you try to run away from the unfortunate issue at the National Assembly, particularly the House of Representatives, the more you find yourself unable to do it. The reason is clear. As a commentator on national issues, this is where the action has refused to die down. Madam Etteh, has been indicted by the Idoko panel, over her award of N628million contract for the renovation of her house and that of her deputy; but Madam has refused to resign, and the House has more than ever before (at least in her short reign) become more turbulent and tension-soaked.
The crisis which has brought her more to limelight than her announcement as Speaker itself claimed the first casualty a couple of days ago in Honourable Aminu Safana, who died while drumming support for the Speaker. If I were Etteh, given this development and the volume of pressure on her, I would tender my resignation letter to secure a safe landing. I would call an emergency session and address the house in the following manner.
Here is the excerpt
For some time now, I sat over this House as the first woman Speaker of the Parliament in Nigeria. I had dreams, I had big plans for myself, before some bunch of hawks and no-do-well members leaked something which you all know about to the press. And since then, every one including failed politicians, herbalists, the gutter press, road side commentators and some jobless observers keep saying, “Etteh go, go Etteh”.
I have refused to resign in the first place, because, one, I have come to know how sweet power is, in the higher sence of its meaning: you can celebrate your birthday easily in the US, you can say to the conquered ones, bow to me and they would; you eat and dine with the best in the world; your security men and women can easily shepherded you away when you are in physical danger and there are a lot of personal gains which you as an ordinary floor member or non member can hardly comprehend.
Secondly, I can see, there is no use holding on because the hawks have closed in on me and are very likely to get me out forcefully this week. But let me say categorically clear that I am not guilty; if there is anyone who is guilty it is the men and women who misled me. As a leader, I want to insist on taking the credit for any good done and distancing myself from any bad work (like the mess we are addressing today).
Let me state that the issue at stake is not so much about morality as it is of the persecution of the gender (though there are a few disgruntled elements that found themselves in the midst of the men folk); besides, most, if not all the enemies persecuting me today, are first class thieves, who have hated me because they didn’t get what they bargained for. They are a bunch of heartless hoodlums, vindictive, greedy and self serving.
My fellow colleagues, if I have offended anyone of you, forgive me, and I forgive you all for what you have done to me because you don’t know what you are doing.
As I get ready to step aside today, because of pressure which in all indications is now more than me, let me appeal that this issue should be allowed to rest. I ask the president to make good his personal promise to me, not to allow the EFCC, ICPC harass me. May God punish the press, who have refused to let me rest; and continue to help my supporters. I must at this juncture, express my profound shock for the death of one of my foot soldiers, who died in active service. May His soul rest in perfect peace. To all my supporters, I say, I will be back. Thanks for listening.
