Today, we are expected to put on a face of celebration; dance and sing that once again we have made it. We are forty-seven, hurray! And our children would file out at different locations, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and sing themselves hoarse about how great this country is and how much they love it.
Come of age; yes, or is it easy to come this far? Like Biafra we might have become history long ago, but we have refused to, which is a cause for celebration. Daily, we are growing stronger in that art which has made us really great and proud as a nation; and as a giant of Africa in the last 47 years. We have perfected the art of electoral fraud, robbery, corruption, fraud, religious riots and many more. Our educational system is so functional, that we churn thousands of graduates, on regular basis; we also have a functional health care system, that’s so busy we have to go abroad to get treatment; our power supply produces a regular shining darkness, and water supply has become a thing of the past. In fact at 47, a snail can hardly boast of out running us, when it comes to development. What else can we then ask for as a nation? All we need is to be contented and go on celebrating our achievements so far and then find a way of consolidating them. We should also be religious in tucking our fingers into our ears whenever enemies of this progress come smoking and telling us how we have refused to grow in almost five decades, how we have refused to become a corrupt-free world, where elections are conducted without recourse to fraud and violence, as they are done in some cowardly nations) where there would be no fraud and corruption, (as in some selfish and greedy nations); where leaders would care more about the business of leadership than simply lining their pockets; where infrastructural facilities are to be provided as if our forefathers had them; where job opportunities would be provided as if our men and women cannot even pick up arms and rob again; where one man in the North or South cannot stand up and sever the neck of his fellow man in the interest of religion or ethnicity, where...... Happily, all these dreams appear to be utopian in nature, because we do not seem to have the right political will to attain them, yet. Our children and all of us who are celebrating today should rise up and make a toast. We should celebrate independence in electoral fraud, poverty and slowgress, and simply hope that we shall remain great for ever and ever! Quote this article on your site | Print | E-mail
