Eunice Eyo With statistics 31,26 and 35, 17 year old Eunice Eyo emerged Nigeria’s Super Model at the maiden edition of the contest held at the Muson Centre recently. Perhaps it was her unusual features, her long neck, or sheer luck that Eunice Eyo’s level would changed for life, on Saturday the 22nd of September 2007.
Whatever it was, Eunice shone brightly from amongst the 15 contestants at the Next Nigeria’s Super Model contest held at the Muson Centre, a trait which saw her emerge as winner of the maiden edition of the Next Super Model contest. As part of its co-operate responsibility, the National Sports Lottery (NSL) chief sponsors of the contest, the show was tagged ‘Catwalk for the Voiceless’ as it not only involved the changing the of lives and status of the models but also, it served as a means of providing for the less privileged in the society. The contest began with a talk on the need of sensitizing the public about the plight of the less privilege, a segment which was presented by Mrs Laila St Matthew Daniels, Executive Coordinator of ACTS GENERATION a non governmental Christian Ministry, with a mission to providing assistance to hurting, traumatized, and marginalized people especially women. This was followed by a display of catwalk skills by some kids from the Little Saints Orphanage, some of who judging from dexterity displayed on the runway, will make it as one of Nigeria’s super model in future. The contesting models strutted their stuff in collection of; minis, fitted pants and shirts made from African prints, jeans trousers and tops mixed and match with African fabrics, flirty frocks in vibrant yellows, salmon pinks, while lively ethnic prints brought an unexpected twist of color to otherwise simple pieces. There were sweet mini dresses dazzling with bold sequins and lovely gowns accented with frilly ruffles. It was also an opportunity for House of Jola to showcase her mens collection with the best of Nigeria’s male models displaying their prowess on the runway, in clean cut casual and corporate suits. All collections designed by Mrs Joan Okorodudu of House Of J’Ola who was also Project initiator of the Next Nigeria Super Model. Hosts for the night were Irene Ochi and D’Avenuez while judges were Funke Kuti, Group Head; Corporate Social Responsibility and Reputation Management of NSL, Kumbi Oloyede, Alex Kaja, Tewa Ogunsanya; publisher Exquisite magazine, Paul Jackson and Remi Diagbare Allure editor of the Vanguard Newspapers. The girls were judged on performance in house, professional conduct in the house, and performance on stage. Though it was a model search, it had all the trappings of a beauty pageant. The girls all looking anxious to clinch the coveted title, were not only tested on their catwalk skills but, also their level of intelligence, where quite a few flunked the general question on what they would do if they became Nigeria’s next super model.
Cross section of contestants As with beauty pageants, different category of awards were given to some of the deserving girls; Miss photogenic; Issy Atagame, Congeniality; Aisha Olu, Best behaved girl in camp; Adeola Bello, Most Sophisticated girl was Kendra. The wining contestants will be rewarded with shoes from Rivista and clothes from House of Jola. Side attractions were musical performances by two acts; Aju an International artist, who thrilled the audience with two tracks from her album and Nigeria’s rock star Dabyna in the mode of America’s Prince, who got the audience clamoring for more with his eclectic performance and mastery of the guitar. The competition was no doubt a platform for aspiring models to launch at a chance for international fame. Five top winners were selected: 4th Oluwabunmi 3rd; Chinwe Onuorha; 2nd Issy Atageme, all of who will attend modeling competition in different countries. 1st runner up was Bunmi Ademokoya, who will represent Nigeria at the Model of the World contest in Turkey in November. While the winner Miss Eunice Eyo got a Kia car and cash from NSL, she will also attend the Miss Model of the World contest in China, later this year. Quote this article on your site | Print | E-mail
