About N24 million has been spent by the Lagos State Government on cleft lips corrective operations being carried out on six patients at the state University Teaching Hospital [LASUTH], Ikeja.
The state Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) made this known to newsmen in Ikeja yesterday after visiting the patients that were on their sixth circle surgery operations towards correcting cleft and palate deformities at LASUTH. The governor described the operations as part of the fulfillment of his electioneering campaign, saying, “each patient would have spent about N250, 000 for the corrective surgery. Fashola said the programme was initiated by his predecessor, Sen. Bola Tinubu, adding that on completion, it would put smiles to the faces of the children and enable them live in Lagos of their dreams. “This is our own poverty alleviation and eradication; we are determined to uplift the weak; this is a challenge to us the free and fit to encourage them to face the future challenges; in the nearest future, they may become surgeons, medical doctors in this hospital or even governors or president of the country,’’ he said. The governor assured Lagosians that the programme would continue as long as he remains in power, saying, “I am delighted to fulfill part of the promises made during my campaigns to give comfort and smiles to the children with deformities; this shall continue as long as I remain the Governor,’’ he said. Speaking further, Fashola said the programme was also a way of putting the state’s medical experts at the disposal of the poor at no costs to them, “These children with the restoration of their mouths to normal will have the chance of being what they wanted to be in life and leave the dreams they have for Lagos.” The governor also yesterday inspected both the Tarzan and Texas Connections Jetties where he assured Lagosians that the redevelopment of the jetties would soon commence in line with his promises during his campaigns. According to him, “This is part of our redevelopment of the water ways as a way of reducing pressure on road transportation system in the state.” Quote this article on your site | Print | E-mail
