Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, yesterday declared the preparedness of his government to rid the state of heaps of refuse.
To this end, the state government has procured a state-for-the-earth waste compacting machine at a whooping cost of N100m. Fashola who made this disclosure at the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) Headquarter, Ijora while inaugurating the compactor machine believed to be the largest in Africa to manage waste in the landfill sites said the use of the machine will lead to the disappearance of refuse from Lagos streets. “The era of long queues by the trucks used by the PSP operators to dump refuse at landfill site was over as the compactors will be there now to take care of the wastes. “Once the landfill sites are well managed, the trucks will access the sites, dump their refuse immediately and go for more. This will bring about a refuse free society and Lagos will be clean again”, Fashola further said. The governor urged the Private Sector Participating (PSP) operators in refuse management to reciprocate the state government’s gesture by ensuring prompt clearance of wastes from nooks and crannies of the metropolis. According to him, additional 500,000 bins had been acquired by the state and would be mounted in strategic areas across the state where residents could have access and disposes their refuse. Speaking when conducting the governor around, General Manager of LAWMA, Mr. Oladimeji Oresanya, said the quality of equipment and personnel at the agency’s disposal now were capable of putting an end to era of filth in the state. Said he, “This equipment, Tana, came with about N6m worth of spare parts and the firm that supplied it had promised to ensure adequate maintenance.” On her part, Managing Director of Kojol Nigeria Limited, Mrs. Kemi Oni, promised that her firm will supply the additional equipment to the state government within the next four months. According to her, the equipment would be managed initially by her firm pending when officials of the state government currently being trained by Kojol, could handle it well.
