Rivers state governor, Celestine Omehia, has accused the leader of Ijaw National Forum (INF), Chief Edwin Clark, of aiming to destroy the state by mongering divisive ethnic sentiments.
Clark had alleged that Omehia was supporting the top echelon of his cabinet involved in cultism activities that had threatened the peace of the state recently. But after a meeting with Vice President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa where other Niger Delta governors discussed ways of rehabilitating the so-called cultists and militants, Omehia hinted of possibility of seeking redress if the Clark did not prove his case. The governor pointed out that “the position of the law is that who alleges has the onus to prove. If any person has alleged that another person is a thief, he has the onus to prove that he is a thief. “If somebody alleges that the other is a member of cult, the person who makes the allegation has the onus to prove it. It is not just enough to malign and destroy another person’s character. “Another thing is; what are your motives? Some have ulterior motives in all these allegations. Some people who want to destroy and divide Rivers state into two or three ethnic nationalities are those who are carrying this information but Rivers state remains”. Omehia stressed that “every person has the fundamental right to protect his image and character, and if you destroy the person’s character, the person has a right to go to court. My position is that let the person who alleges that others are members of cult to put it in writing and convince the world and then the world can understand”. He also defended impending demolition of structures along the waterfront in the state, saying, “Ijaws are not the only people who are along the waterfront in Rivers state. The Rivers government owes it a responsibility to develop every part of the state and we have the Ogonis, Okrikas, Kalabaris and the Ikweres living along the waterfront. So, should somebody come out to say that it is only the Ijaws are being planned to be destroyed. It is mischief. “Sometimes, I believe that somehow when age is affecting some people, their thinking and reasoning could go differently. Let there be no confusion in Rivers state. Whoever is claiming to be the fighter for Ijaw people should fight for himself first. Rivers state is one, there is no destruction of any ethnic nationality in the state. We are all planning as one and the development and urbanization of Rivers state, as a matter of principle, must continue”. On the meeting held with the Vice President, Omehia disclosed that “it ting is about the rehabilitation of ‘our brothers in the creeks’. We in Rivers state have applied the carrot and stick method and what we have decided here today is the carrot. Where we offer the carrot and it does not work, we use the stick. “So the plan here today is to rehabilitate those who want to be rehabilitated. That is, those who want be reoriented, further training, economic empowerment, and these plans have been mapped out and the minister of Intergovernmental Affairs is now in charge of it”.
