President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua says he will order a thorough investigation of allegations made by leaders of the Ijaw National Forum (INF) on the causes of the recent crisis in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
He said so on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa when he received an INF delegation led by Chief Edwin Clark. The President said that he was also prepared to establish a judicial commission of inquiry into the crisis, if the initial investigations require that. According to the president, “you have made very grave allegations. Put the allegations in writing and we will investigate them. I assure you that our interest is for peace and stability in the Niger Delta. “We need peace to achieve rapid development of the region. If it is clearly established that anyone is a party to causing the crises, he will be dealt with according to the law. We will act on whatever comes out of a thorough and just investigation”. The President also assured the delegation that he will initiate further dialogue on plans to relocate residents of the waterfront areas of Port-Harcourt, a development Clark had complained against. “The people have been there before 1912, before Port Harcourt was founded, the original aborigines of the place. If you drive them away within four months where do they go to? It will be a time bomb. Do you know what is called cultural genocide, ethnic genocide?” Clark had lamented. He said he had earlier called for state of emergency in Rivers state because the state is ruled by cultist who are financing “over 103 cult groups in Rivers State”.
