For winning the U-17 FIFA World Cup in South Korea, the Golden Eaglets were on Saturday night rewarded by President Umaru Yar’Adua with individual national honours of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) and a three-bedroom flat in Abuja.
The six members of the team’s technical crew were also given three-bedroom flats in Abuja but with the higher national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR). President Yar’Adua declared these largesse at a state banquet in honour of the team during which the allocation letters and keys to the houses were given to the recipients. Yar’Adua expressed the hope that “these incentives will inspire and challenge and others to aspire to even to even greater attainments in your professions”, adding that “your victory at this time in our journey national restoration represents a challenge and an inspiration to us all. “It has strengthened our faith in the emergence of a re-energized Nigeria . You have demonstrated that Nigeria and Nigerians have what it takes to be world leaders and major players on the world stage”. The president used the opportunity to challenge the Nigerian Football Association and the National Sports Commission to ensure that the country improves on its world football ranking as regretted that the Nigeria had slumped in the FIFA rankings from the top six eleven years ago. He therefore called on the stakeholders to ensure that the country becomes one of the top 10 football nations before the next FIFA U-17 tournament which Nigeria will be hosting in 2009. He also urged the relevant authorities to replicate the achievement of the Eaglets in other sports and called on the relevant agencies to prosecute the forthcoming African Nations Cup and the 2014 Commonwealth Games bid with “utmost seriousness” “Nigerians expect nothing less than the return of the trophy which we last won in 1994”, he said though of the 2008 African Nations Cup to be hosted by Ghana.
