Oriyomi Adebayo The Nigeria fashion week which held last August came to a climax last Saturday, with the eleventh edition of the Nigerian Fashion Show, held at the Muson Centre Lagos. The show began right on schedule and ended three hours later.
Adiele the African drumming dance troupe opened the show, with energetic African drumming and frenetic gyration. The sheer verve and vitality of the dance drew applause from the audience made up of a cocktail of diplomats and Nigerians. Judging the six designers who participated, were; outgoing NFS designer of the year 2006 Tessy Olise, Prince Akanni Oyefusi of Nobel Afrique and Joy Essen of the Guardian. Five categories were featured; Swim Suits, Casuals, Corporate wears, Evening and the Bridals. For the six unknown designers, the evening was about to transform the life of three from obscurity to stardom.
Designs by Looking Cute, la Chyke and Elizabeth Elizabeth Claire, Lachyke, Looking Cute, Nisine, Toorad Couture and Vendrika were first timers, to the Nigerian Fashion Show, however, their efforts were a testament to the creativity that is inherent in the Nigerian designer. Every accessary imaginable was used to enhance designs, from cd tapes, dog chains and tape rules, to mats, baskets, flowers. However, from the imagination displayed, it was clear the tussle for the crown was between two designers : Oriyomi Adebayo of Toorad couture and Idemudia Happiness of Looking fashion gallery. They give their imagination free hand by crossing the boundaries of practicality to produce ensembles that were master pieces, albeit, theoretical ones. But then, that is what a fashion contest is all about; how far can your imagination go?
