Nigeria kept alive her slim hopes of qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa with a hard earned lone goal win over Mozambique in Abuja with Malaga striker Victor Obinna Nsofor scoring the winner three minutes into stoppage time for the Super Eagles.
Needing to win and for Group Two leaders Tunisia to not win at home to Kenya, the Super Eagles found the visiting Mambas tough opponents in front of a half empty stadium and the reason for that could not be far fetched as Mozambique threatened first with an effort crashing off the Nigerian bar barely 20 minutes into the match.
Tunisia had meanwhile taken the lead in Tunis after just four minutes through Issam Jomaa and it looked like that goal would seal qualification for the Carthage Eagles until Spain based Nsofor headed home the winner deep in stoppage time.
The wins for Nigeria and Tunisia mean the latter now needs to win away at Mozambique in the final weekend of qualifying phase to reach South Africa 2010 while a draw for the Carthage Eagles could also see them through should Nigeria fail to win at Kenya; a win being the only option for the Super Eagles to qualify.
In other qualifying matches, Ghana lost for the first time in the series, falling 1-0 at Benin Republic though the Black Stars have sealed its place at the football mundial and were joined by Cote D'Ivoire courtesy of a 1-1 draw at Malawi while Algeria edged closer to the World Cup with a 3-1 win over Rwanda.
Algera leads Group Three with 13 points, three ahead of African champions Egypt ahead of the showdown mid November in Cairo where the Pharaohs must beat the Desert Warriors of Algeria by at least three unreplied goals to qualify for the World Cup.
