For the exlcusive jewelry maker and designer, the exhibition, features the evolution of virtuoso to Yemisi, who ince its launch in 2000, has quietly gathered momentum growing from a hobby and dream to a pioneering accessories design label of international repute and a household name in Nigeria.
From inception, Virtuoso has participated in numerous international exhibitions. It has also received wide media attention from television and international print media. In 2005 Virtuoso was selected from a pool of very competitive designers as the best fashion accessories designer for the year. The label also won the St. Moritz style award for accessory design and later featured at the St Moritz style select. The label was also one of the three award winning labels invited to represent Nigeria at the design “INDABA” conference in Cape Town South Africa in the year 2006 and 2007. This month marks a new dimension in the label’s history. It will mark the evolution of VIRTUOSO into a new phase branded YEMISI. YEMISI will take the innovation and uniqueness VIRTUOSO has become synonymous with, to a more refined and mature level. The focus of every piece to be branded YEMISI is to ensure that it competes effectively on a global platform and also that it represents the creativity and energy of Nigeria to the rest of the world The new phase YEMISI will be unveiled at an exhibition titled “ the freedom of being…….” The exhibition is a playful nod to the diverse aspects of our exotic culture as Nigerians. The exhibition will take place on Sunday the 14th of July 2007, at Ocean View Restaurants, Adetokunboh Ademola Street, Victoria Island, from 2pm. THE FREEDOM OF BEING… Is an exhibition that celebrates unique aspects of Nigeria’s ethnic groups and the unique cultures that helped form us into the people we are today. Culture, simply put is the way people have given meaning to life by learning to relate with one another and with the environment in which they find themselves. In Nigeria, our different cultures set us apart but intrestingly links us to one another. Aspects of culture such as food, beliefs, myths, dress, customs are relied upon in celebrating the uniqueness of select ethnic groups via contemporary fashion accessories. This exhibition Yemisi discloed was borne out of a strong need to have a unique product called “NIGERIA”, one that positively stands apart on a global platform. It is to lend a voice to the current transformation taking place in the minds of young Nigerians, to reintroduce and grow to love Nigeria: first to ourselves and subsequently to the world at large.
