President Umaru Yar’Adua has been called upon by the Lagos State House of Assembly to direct all concerned agencies i.e the Federal Ministry of Works and Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to immediately repair all federal roads in Lagos especially the Apapa Oshodi express road because of its economic importance.
Calling the attention of the house to the poor state of federal roads in Lagos, under matters of urgent public importance, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade observed that the bad shape of the roads cause heavy traffic with the attendant toll on the human and economic well being of Lagos nay Nigeria. According to Agunbiade a lot of valuable time is lost everyday to traffic jams all over the state due to the bad roads. It also provides an avenue for undesirable elements to rob, maim and kill law abiding citizens. Corroborating his colleague, Hon Moshood Oshun urged the Lagos state governor to ensure that the ministry of works to fix these roads in the interest of the Lagosians and not wait for the federal government response that may come late. On his part Hon. Ogala stated that the state government should not only consider the hardship on the people but also the economic importance of the roads to the state and make the roads motorable. In his submission Majority Leader, Hon. Kolawole Taiwo said the major reason why the roads become un motorable is due to the lack of drainages for the roads and the fact that they are below sea level. Moreover the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adeyemi Ikuforiji called on the state governor, Babatunde Fashola to mobilize all concerned agencies to give immediate attention to the Apapa Oshodi roads and state roads. Meanwhile Hon. Ademoye brought to the floor the issue of collapsed buildings, giving the example of a building that crumbled on Sunday at Ebute Metta in which over 8 persons lost their lives. To Hon. Ogala this is a clear case of contempt to the laws of Lagos State for a house that was built as a warehouse to be turned into a storey building without due approval. He continued that 20 residential rooms was incorporated into the house while the ground floor remained a warehouse. He called on the Ministry of Planning to performs its functions.
