The Lagos State House of Assembly has urged the federal government to take urgent steps to remedy the power situation in Nigeria. This call became necessary as manufacturing industries have started relocating from Lagos to Ghana to take advantage of the power and other incentives provided by that country.
Speaking at plenary session Monday under matters of urgent public importance, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade said manufacturing companies in Nigeria are already folding up and relocating to Ghana due to the liberal investment climate. He stated that the implication for the state is high unemployment and increase in criminal activities. The problem, Agunbiade said, is power outage. His words “Manufacturers in Nigeria are crying over the power situation in the country which is the real bane of our manufacturing sector. I think Lagos state government should tell the Federal Government to allow it implement the IPP and distribute power to industrial areas because Lagos would be most affected by these movements to Ghana”. Contributing to the debate, Hon. Lola Akande advised that such a concession should be given to all states to avoid mass movement of people into Lagos. In his comments Hon. Adeola Olamilekan said it is high time the Federal Government decentralize Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), because huge funds injected into the body has not yielded anything. Adding ,that it would be very dangerous for Lagos to lose its industries to neighboring Ghana. He called on the state government to liaise with the Federal Government on the Issue. While congratulating Ghana Government “for playing it right”, Hon. Bola Olujobi -Badmus said the people should see it as a challenge to the Federal Government which is very dormant, adding that it is an opportunity for everybody, NGOs, civil society etc. to come together and cry out against what is going on. A PDP representative, Hon. Musiliu Alogba, however, called on Governor Babatunde Fashola to do something about power supply in the state, adding that the state is losing a lot of revenue because of the movement of companies to Ghana.
He further advised that the state government should set up a group to lobby the Federal government to allow the independent power project.
