The Super Falcons of Nigeria yesterday survived a major embarrassment in as many months when they salvaged a 2-2 draw against South Africa's Banyana Banyana in their first group match at the All Africa Games women football event in Algiers.
Defender Onome Ebi headed into her own net to give the South Africans a first half lead which they doubled soon after to go into the break two goals up. But Ifeanyi Chiejine pioneered a Falcons fight-back when she halved the deficit in the second half and Tawa Ishola made sure the defending champions rescued some dignity by grabbing the equaliser. Nigeria coach Jossy Lad remained confident despite the setback. "It was a good game, we played well and created a lot of chances, but we failed to finish," Lad said while exonerating Ebi for her own goal. "It was not really a mistake like that from her. She wanted to head the ball over and it just somehow went in." Nigeria's next play Ethiopia.in a match that they cannot afford to lose or draw. Quote this article on your site | Print | E-mail
