The Super Falcons of Nigeria this afternoon made a shock exit out of the African Women's Championship following a 1-0 loss to hosts Equatorial Guinea in the first semi-final of the Championships.
Nigeria had scrapped through the group stage with a win over already qualified South Africa in her last match, preceded by two disappointing draws against arch-rivals Ghana and minnows Tunisia.
And inevitably, Nigeria's total domination of female football in Africa would see an end and fittingly, it came in the hands of the E-Guineans that have in their fold quite a number of Nigerians.
But not to take any credit off the hosts, the E-Guineans came into the match in much better form having won all her group matches; including a 1-0 win over 2004 finalists Cameroun, scoring eight goals in the process. Nigeria on the contrary scored only two all through the Championships.
The defeat marks the first time ever that Nigeria would fail to appear in the final of the African Women's Championships and indeed win an edition having won the previous five editions, recording just one defeat in that run.
