Inter Milan opened a four-point gap in the Serie A following a scrappy 1-0 win over arch-rivals Juventus while a Wesley Sneijder strike was enough to ease the tension for Real Madrid in Spain's la Liga.
Jose Mourinho's Inter domminated the better period of the encounter with Swedish forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic missing two chances in either half before Ghana international Sulley Muntari slotted home the winner off Ibrahimovic's scuffed effort in the 72nd minute.
The win puts Inter on 30 points, ahead of Milan on 26 points with the Rossoneri playing on Sunday against Torino in the late kick-off. Juventus meanwhile is third on 24 points but will likely drop with Napoli (23) and Lazio (22) still to play.
A win for Napoli and Lazio would also see Fiorentina drop from fourth place as the Florence side came from a goal down to defeat Christian Obodo's Udinese 4-2, a defeat that left Udinese seventh on 21 points ahead of Sunday's matches.
In Spain, Bernd Schuster had some pressure piled off him with Real Madrid's 1-0 win over Recreativo Huelva, moving the Merengues to within two points of leaders Barcelona who play host to Ikechukwu Uche's Getafe late on Sunday.
Other top teams however failed to maintain the pace with Valencia drawing goalless with Sevilla to leave both sides on 24 points, four behind Barcelona while Villarreal fell 3-0 at home to Bartholomew Ogbeche's Real Valladolid to remain third on 25 points.
