World champions Italy have been drawn with rivals Brazil, the United States and African champions Egypt in Group B of the 2009 Confederations Cup, a converge of each continents football champions one year ahead of the every World Cup since 1992.
Host South Africa is drawn in Group A alongside surprise Asian champions Iraq, Oceanic winners New Zealand and European champions Spain that currently leads the FIFA World Rankings.
The Confederations Cup will hold in 2009 from June 14 to June 28 as South Africa prepares to host the first ever FIFA World Cup to be held on the African continent.
The Confederations Cup began in 1992 and was originally known as the King Fahd Cup since it was organised by Saudi Arabia but FIFA took over organisation of the tournament in 1997, turning it to a two-year event.
In 2005, it was decided that the FIFA Confederations Cup would hold in every four years preceding the FIFA World Cup in the host country of such upcoming World Cup, therefore making the Confederations Cup effectively a dress rehearsal for every World Cup thereafter.
