In a couple of hours, all the artistes who have done enough to get nominations in the different categories of the first ever MTV African Music Awards would have or at least be about to know their fate.
Since the past week, we have examined the profiles of some of the artistes repping naija in the awards. We started with Tu Face, did a piece on D'Banj, another on P-Square and the last on Asa and Sasha. Due to time constraint, we will try to talk on the trio of 9ice, Naeto C and Ikechukwu. None of these artistes can be termed rookies although the three of them altogether haven't lasted more than four years in the limelight on naija's music platform. 9ice...we all know, Naeto C and Ikechukwu...we can't claim to be ignorant of. 9ice Let's start with 9ice...the Gongo Aso crooner had a tough time breaking unto the big scene here at home but since then nobody has had it better than him in the whole of the country. It was like a joke when the Gongo Aso album was released and then everyone was listening to the '9ice' guy. He himself would be astonished by how far the album has brought him. 9ice has been in the news lately for receiving awards after awards and in the process illuminating a line in one of his hit tracks..."no doubt me, I go bring home grammy". Many have tipped him as the strongest Nigerian candidate to bring that much coveted grammy award going by recent antecedents. He's been nominated in the Best HipHop category alongside HHP of South Africa, Professor Jay of Tanzania, Lil wayne and The Game both of the United States as well as in the Best New Act category where he has Kwaw Kese of Ghana, Wahu of Kenya, Da L.E.S of South Africa and Naeto C for company. His success in any of these categories would reassure his teeming fans that he can fulfill his dream of winning a grammy. Naeto C 'Kini Big Deal'...do I need to tell you the guy's name? Anyways, Naeto C is in the run for the Best New Act award. Come to think of it, Naeto C is one of the returnee nigerians who have taken the nigerian music scene by storm...that's a topic for another day, sha. Naeto C's 'You Know my P' is one of the hit albums of the year in the country today. In fact, it is more recent which is why I'm sure y'all know him. Though he's in a tough grouping especially with the presence of 9ice, he would still be a worthy winner. Ikechukwu Finally, Ikechukwu is one of the returnee musicians I mentioned earlier. He got to many nigerians with the hit track, 'Ikechukwu'...the "my name is Ikeee-chukwu" line. Most recently, he's won many over with 'Wind Am Well', a track that has earned him recognition across the continent of Africa. Coincidentally, the same track earned him the nomination in the Best Video category. He's got a mountain to surmount in P-Square's 'Roll It'...P-Square are giant killers when it comes to music videos. Also, Movaizhaleine of Gabon for 'Nous', Freshly Ground and Pro Kid both of South Africa for 'Pot Belly' and 'Uthini Ngo Pro' respectively are competing for the Best Video Award. All speculations will be put to rest when the winners are announced at The Velodrome in Abuja today. We wish all nigerian nominees all the best, see ya...after the awards.
