Asa Can you imagine talking about nigerian female musicians without mentioning Asa and Sasha? Impossible!..I hear you say. Truly, these two are at the summit of female music making in this country. Quite worthily, they both have been nominated in the best female artist category in the first ever MTV African Music Awards.
Asa and Sasha do have some things in common...like being females, being musicians, having one album apiece and also enjoying lotta popularity amongst Nigerian music fans not to forget the nomination they both have currently. We all know Asa and Sasha are not real names, you can get their real names and other biographic details of them almost everywhere...so, we shouldn't bother about that, should we? The outgoing year has been outstanding for both artistes. Sasha who have been much around on the music scene for quite a while released her debut album titled, 'First Lady' with the hit track, 'Adara'. She had done a host of collabos with some artistes including Trybesmen, Sound Sultan, Faze, Azadus amongst others. Sasha does rap music, which is not a familiar terrain amongst the female folks. However, she's done quite well for herself in that field. Hear this, she released her first single in 2003 with the title, 'Emi Le Gan' which topped music charts for weeks and a year after, she was nominated in the Most Promising Female in Africa category of KORA awards which was followed by a nomination in Best Upcoming artiste of AMEN Award for her first single. Some months later, 'First Lady' was released into the music market and it was warmly received by music fans across the country especially the hit track 'Adara'. The album really did enough to bring her name back to the lips of nigerians just when it seemed she was fading away. Simply put, her being nominated for this award isn't just a fluke. On the other hand, Asa is a relatively newcomer to the music industry back here. She was officially launched earlier this year with the release of her debut album...'Asha'. You all are witnesses. The success of that album can not be described here. Radio and television stations, laptops, ipods, mp3 players and newspaper pages felt the arrival of that album...it was distinct. Since then, she has been nominated in different categories of different awards...some she won, others she did not. She is in for another one here which she would be hoping to win. While we may be talking only about nigerian representatives in this category...we should remember there are others also. It could be either Asa or Sasha and it also could be neither of them. Wahu of Kenya, Dama Do Bling of Mozambique and Zonke of South Africa are all also in the race for this same crown. To underscore our belief that Asa was a major hit on the Nigerian music scene this year, she was also nominated in the Artist of the Year category alongside D'Banj, P-Square, HHP and Seether both of South Africa. Lots of luck to them both.
