Nigeria's U-20 female national team this evening in Chile opened the U-20 Women's World Cup in Chile with a dramatic 3-2 win over Oceanic rivals New Zealand while the United States also started off with a win.
In Group A, Nigeria and New Zealand got the honour of the opening match of the World Cup and did well to advertise hopefully an interesting tournament with a five-goal thriller which the Super Falconets won 3-2.
Sarah Michael and Ogonna Chukwudi had put the Falconets 2-0 up with goals four minutes apart to quickly wipe away an opening 30 minutes without a goal while there was enough time for Ria Percival to pull one back before half time.
Percival then brought the Kiwis level with a well taken equaliser seven minutes into the second half but the Falconets had the last laugh with Rita Chikwelu scoring a dramatic winner in the 92nd minute.
England meanwhile top the group after two second half goals from Brooke Chaplen minutes before the hour mark and Toni Duggan 10 minutes from time sealed a 2-0 win over hosts Chile in Coquimbo.
In other matches played so far, favourites the United States opened her campaign with a 3-0 win over France to go top of Group B ahead of China and Argentina that played out a goalless draw in the opening group encounter with the Chinese denied twice by the crossbar.
Nigeria will next face the Young Lionesses of England on November 22 from 10p.m Nigerian time before her final group match against hosts Chile on November 26 from 11p.m Nigerian time.
