D'Banj Not too many people can dispute the fact that D'Banj is currently the biggest name on the Nigerian music scene, many things can and have been testifying to that fact...every time he gets on stage, no matter where, the crowd reception is always electrifying and not to talk about his latest album success.
The story of D'Banj can be aptly termed a steady and consistent rise to fame considering the fact that he only started his musical career here in Nigerian about four years ago with hit singles like, 'Mobolowon' and 'Tongolo'...that time, he was just trying to break out of the JJC and 419 squad. Well, this peice won't attempt to do a biography of D'Banj...that is everywhere already. Rather this piece will try to examine D'Banj's nomination in three categories of the upcoming MTV African Music Awards scheduled to hold in few weeks. He has been nominated in the Best Male, Artiste of the Year and Best Live performer categories. Before now, D'Banj has not been lacking in awards like some of his Nigerian counterparts. In 2005, he won the Most Promising Male Artiste award in that year's edition of KORA All African Awards. In 2006, He was Nigerian Music Awards' Artist of the year, Channel O Music Video Awards' Best Newcomer and Best West African awards winner both for 'Tongolo' . In 2007, he was nominated in the Best Special Effects category of the 207 Channel O Music Video Awards for 'Why Me' and he won the Best African Act Award category of the Music of Black Origin awards. More recently, he was named the United Nations Youth Ambassador, probably his biggest achievement so far. Now he is in the race for three more awards and the big question is how well will he fare considering the opposition he has in other nominees...I tell you, they are really huge oppositions. With current hits like, 'Mo Gbono Feli Feli', 'Oloun Maje' and 'Entertainer' still making waves in the industry, one can easily justify his three nominations. In the Best Male category, Tu Face leads the other contenders...his album released earlier this year, has surpassed the expectations of many and even gone as far as won him the Album of the Year award in this year's edition of the Nigerian Music Awards. D'Banj also has huge contest in Jua Cali of Kenya, DJ Cleo and HHP both of South Africa in this category. In the best live performer category, in addition to Samini of Ghana and Cassette and Jozi both of South Africa, D'Banj has strong contest in our very own P-Square. I bet Nigerian music fans would themselves find it difficult to choose between P-Square and D'Banj. As I said earlier, D'Banj always has an electrifying presence on stage and P-Square is not any worse in terms of stage performance. It's going to be a very close match-up in this category. Lastly, in the Artist of the year category, D'Banj has one more contender in Asa while HHP and Seether of South Africa complete the category hopefuls and not forgetting P-Square. Asa has had an outstanding year with the huge success of her debut album which was released earlier in the year which makes her a strong candidate too. Much as we could continue to write about D'Banj's chances in the awards, we can only wait for the awards to hold to know for sure how he fares...it's only right for us to wish him all the best.
