The lethargic season of Real Madrid continued with a disappointing 1-0 loss away at Real Valadolid while Valencia stuttered yet again with a 3-2 loss at Sporting Gijon in la Liga matches played so far.
Real Madrid coach Bernt Schuster was already under pressure coming into this encounter with Bartholomew Ogbeche's club following back-to-back Champions League defeats to Juventus.
Cannobio however piled more on the German coach and the Spanish giants with his 48th minute goal while Gabriel Heinze got himself a late red card as the loss prevented El-Merengues from going top of the Spanish top division for a day ahead of Barcelona's match against Recreativo Huelva.
Real Madrid's loss opened the window for Valencia to rise to second for the mean time but Los Che found the going difficult against Gijon as the visitors came out 3-2 winners and continue a steady rise up the league table.
In Italy, Obinna Nsofor's Inter Milan opened a three point gap atop the Serie A with a hard earned 2-0 win at Palermo with goals from Swedish international Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the second half.
City rivals AC Milan could however close the gap on the Nerazurri to one point with a win over Chievo Verona in the San Siro while Lazio will need a win over AS Roma in the Rome derby to come to within two points of Inter Milan.
