The highs of last weekend's win over Manchester United was extinguished by a resolute Aston Villa side which defeated Arsenal 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium to secure Villa's first win at Arsenal in the league since 1993.
After good saves by Manuel Almunia from Ashley Young's second half penalty, Steve Sidwell and Gareth Barry, the Spanish keeper was undone by a classic header from his own defender, Gael Clichy under pressure from Gabriel Agbonlahor.
Agbonlahor himself completed the milestone result for Villa later on to send the Midlands side level on 23 points behind Arsenal in fourth place while champions Manchester United romped to a 5-0 thrashing of Seyi Olofinjana's Stoke City to move into third with 24 points and a game in hand.
Cristiano Ronaldo opened the floodgate of goals with a well taken third minute free kick but it took till the stroke of half time for the Red Devils to extend its advantage through Michael Carrick.
Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov scored the third three minutes after the break before 17 year old Danny Welbeck scored a cracker from 25 yards on his first team debut.
Ronaldo, favourite for FIFA's World Player of the Year, hit the post and pulled off a good save off a free kick but finally got his second and United's fifth with yet another free kick.
United now lie eight points behind Liverpool that went top earlier in the day with a 2-0 win at Bolton Wanderers courtesy of headed goals from Dirk Kuyt and captain Steven Gerrard in each half. Chelsea however can regain top spot with a win in today's late kick-off at West Brom.
In other matches, Newcastle United came from a third minute goal down to take a 2-1 lead at home to Wigan but Michael Owen's equaliser off Shola Ameobi's spilled shot and Obafemi Martins' left foot cracker in the 89th minute was cancelled out in the 90th minute by former Toons player Titus Bramble.
At Craven Cottage, Harry Redknapp and Tottenham Hotspur's unbeaten run was ended abruptly with a 2-1 defeat by Fulham while Sunderland came from a goal down to defeat Blackburn Rovers 2-1 and Portsmouth played a drab goalless draw away at West Ham United.
