TuFace Idibia While some of us might claim not to know anybody named Innocent Ujah Idibia, I bet, none can say he doesn't know that guy called TuFace Idibia although they are the same person. Arguably, he is one of the most decorated artistes to have graced the Nigerian music scene in recent times and for quite a while, he was at the summit of Naija's top musical earners.
Also, almost everybody knows how he started as a member of the 'twice' defunct Plantashun Boiz group, so we won't bother you about that. This piece would just try to profile his music career since the split plus the awards he has already in his kitty...he has been nominated in the Best Male category of the upcoming MTV African Music Awards in Abuja. TuFace's solo career kicked off on a bright note with the release of his first solo album, 'Face2Face' which contained the award winning hit track, 'African Queen' in 2004. The Album, released under the Kennis Music Label was a commercial hit selling about 2 million copies...it was quite way to start and he must have been surprised by it. Two years later, he released his second, 'Grass to Grace' under the same label and contrary to what many expect, it was also a success and earlier this year, he had his latest album injected into the market. It was titled Mine 2 Yours and it has not been bad either. To the issue at hand, TuFace's commercial success has been rewarded not only through the finances but also by various recognitions of his brilliance in terms of awards...he has a whole lotta them already and he's in contest for one more. In 2005, he started on a high note by winning the Best African Act Award in the MTV Europe Awards and proceeded to win the Best Male Video and Best African Video in the Channel O Music Video Awards both for 'African Queen'. He was also the Revelation of the Year award winner in the KORA Awards of that same year and was nominated in the Best African Act category in the MOBO Awards 2005. His fine run continued through to 2006. He won the Special Recognition Award in the Hip Hop World Awards. He also won in the Best African Pop and Best African West categories both for 'Ole' in the Channel O Music Video Awards. He wrapped it up for that year with the Nigeria Entertainment Awards' Special Recognition Award. In 2007, he added to his collection of awards the MOBO Awards' Best African Act and he hasn't been emptyhanded this year either. He has already won the Best African Artist Award in the world Music Award and also the Album of the year and R&B Song of the Year awards in this year's edition of the Nigerian Music Awards. In just about two weeks from now, TuFace would be looking to add another feather to his cap by winning in the Best Male Category. He has been nominated alongside Jua Cali of Kenya, DJ Cleo and HHP both of South Africa and our very own D'Banj. We wish him the best.
