A season after Kayode Odejayi and Barnsley shocked Chelsea out of the FA Cup, Ade Akinbiyi helped Burnley, another Championship side, to shock the Blues out of this season's League Cup.
With the Fourth Round match tied at 1-1 after full time with Akinbiyi eqaulising Didier Drogba's opener for Chelsea, Brazilian defender Alex missed a golden opportunity to win the Cup tie late in extra time.
That meant the Blues poor record in the shoot-outs continued as the Championship side won on penalties 5-4 with Chelsea's Wayne Bridge and crucially John Mikel Obi missing their spot kicks. Chelsea have gone 10 years without winning a penalty shoot-out with last season's Champions League final defeat to Manchester United the most high profile of those losses by penalties.
Meanwhile at White Hart Lane, Cup holders Tottenham Hotspur continued its revival under Harry Redknapp after a brace each from Roman Pavluchenko and Frazier Campbell on loan from Manchester United, sealed an impressive 4-2 win over Liverpool.
Spurs was 3-0 up by half time despite the presence of the Reds record signing Fernando Torres and though a youthful Liverpool put up a bit of a comeback with Plessis and Sammy Hyppia scoring, Spurs' fourth sealed a place in the last eight.
Finally on the night, Blackburn Rovers completed the quarterfinal line-up with a 2-1 win at Sunderland with Roque Santa Cruz adding to a Sunderland own goal to put Rovers 2-0 up at the Stadium of Light before Kenwyn Jones pulled one back for the Black Cats.
Already through to the last eight are Arsenal, Manchester United, Seyi Olofinjana's Stoke City, Championship sides Derby County and Watford City.
