Kennery highlife meastro, Dr. Orlando Owoh is dead. The popular musician had been ill for several months most of which he spent at the General Hospital in Ikeja, Lagos. He died in the early hours of yesterday.
Owoh was one of the most successful music makers to have come out of the Western part of Nigeria. He started his music career from the 1960s. In addition to contributing immensely to the development of music in Nigeria, Owoh also fought in the civil war as a nigerian soldier. In a swift response to the development, the President of the Performing Musicians Associations of Nigeria (PMAN), Tee Mac has described Owoh's death as sad and a big loss to the music industry. Owoh was born Oladipupo Owomoyela in Oyo state about 72 years ago a carpenter cum part-time musicaian father although the dad showed not too much enthusiam to his choice of music as a career at the tender age of 12. He went on to become one of the best in his chosen field. In the course of his career, he 'stepped on the toes' of a certain military regime in the country earning him an 18-month incarceration in Alagbon lagos. The album recounting his experience in detention went on to become one of his biggest hits. No doubt, Nigeria has lost yet another icon in her music industry. May his soul rest in peace.
