From "She devil", "Emotional crack", to "Dangerous sisters" where she starred alongside Genevieve. Pretty actress, Dakore Egbuson has played each role perfectly with ease. When it comes to acting, she has all it takes to keep you glued to your screen with her often times intriguing roles which she no doubt plays to the fullest.
The young actress, who stumbled into acting in 2000, while presenting a sports programme on channels TV and NTA, with the movie "She devil", closely followed by "Emotional crack" which gave her three awards at the Reel awards, says acting has been fun but hectic "trying to cram something you should do in six months into one week. It’s crazy but, it is fun I am happy for the opportunity to do it. Settling down on her seat at a fast food joint where we met for this interview, I ordered a bottle of coke while she asked for bottled water. "Water is healthy," she says "it’s advisable to take at least eight bottles of water a day. I take a lot of water, its good for your skin, water is life." Dakore recalls growing up was fun as her parents indulged her in her passion which is the Arts. "I studied music while in Corona, Primary School I played the ‘‘Recorder’’, I used to sing and I was into sports too. "
From singing to sports to acting. Dakore was a very active child and her artistic tendencies had always revealed itself. "Even when I have to go out, my mum said no one used to dress me. I just go pick up what I want, the right accessories for my clothes. My dad even used to ask my opinion on what to wear because, he knew I had a good sense of style. I just put things together and it comes out well." "I wear what I feel comfortable in. You won’t see me in really short clothes or short skirts. I used to wear them when I was much younger but it used to attract much attention to me and I didn’t like it. Now I wear more jeans and shorts. I like shorts but not short skirts because, its not comfortable for a woman. When a lady sits down and she’s wearing something short, she’s always very conscious. she doesn’t have time to relax. she’s too busy adjusting herself. I don’t like that.
Like I said, I’m comfortable in jeans, shirts and fitted tops, scarfs. You work with what you’ve got, that is what I am trying to do. I am an African woman, so I work with what I have, my curves, sense of style. I believe I am gifted, it is not just my eyes, it is a whole package, everything just go together, that is the way God made us. We are fearfully and wonderfully made, so I am making the best use of what I have got." She describes herself as a contemporary dresser, but with an African touch. "I wear traditional outfits though not as often as I would like. But I like to combine contemporary with African sometimes. I think I developed an awareness of that living in London because, I found myself in another environment, I knew my identity and I wanted to hold on to it. So I found a way to start expressing my Africanness.
If I go clubbing for instance, I would wear a dress and tie a Malian print head-tie and they go like "God, what’s that." I started the trend with my friends before I knew it, it was everywhere. But, of course, we all dress well so we can look presentable and if someone commends you that means you’re doing something right." She loves to collect fabrics. "I am going to eventually set my mind to designing soon. I do design but not at a career level, I just draw the designs from my ideas. I am eccentric with my style, I pick certain things that people won’t notice until I wear them. If I want to buy a designer’s item I’ll buy it because it is nice, not because it is designer’s. I do have some designer’s stuff, but it’s not like I’ll die if I do not have it. She dresses as her mood see’s fit. "I am a bit of a moody person, if I feel down I would wear something bright in contrast to the way I feel because, the clothes you wear can alter your state of mind. If I’m in a bad mood and I wear black it’s like I’m soaking up the darkness which is not right. I love light colours, but pink is one of my favourite, it’s very girly, sweet and bright. He beauty routine? "I never sleep with make-up on. Sometimes when I come off the set around two in the morning, I am tired to death and want to sleep, but I still have to wash my face, it washes off sleep from my face sometimes, it doesn’t matter. I make sure I wash my face, cleanse and moisturize. I have a day cream and a night cream that I apply toenhance my skin.
I don’t go for facials. I go for waxing and do a little bit of massage sometimes. But I got tired of perming my hair. My hair is very thick and was difficult to texturize. I used to relax it twice a month. It was getting real ridiculous. So I started braiding and after a while my hair started coming off with the braids and I did’nt find it funny at all. That was when I decided to lock it and it’s beautiful, it’s glorious, some people love it some hate it but, I don’t care, I am an African." How does she take care of it? "I wash it. I don’t go to the salon here in Nigeria because I haven’t really met anyone here that knows how to do dread the way I like. In London I have a salon I go to, owned by a Jamaican, it’s their hair so they do it well. But here, I wash my hair myself, condition it, put cream, spray it and dry it. You know it is not something you have to do regularly. I just love it." And on make-up"I love make-up, "I use Prescriptive. It is made by doctors. I use the foundation and translucent powder. I use mac too. The Bayelsa State born actress who has taken part in about thirty movies (still counting) and former presenter of now popular SoundCity , combines her acting career in Nigeria with her television show in London where she resides. "I miss doing "Soul sisters" and my music, I am a musician as well, I had my debut performance in April 2004 at the Royal Festival Hall." Is there any special person in her life presently? "Of course, Love is important, if you have all the money in the world and you don’t love, your life is an emptyshell but, if you have love it gets you through when you don’t have money."
