When I was much younger, I was very fond of the radio and television. By the age of five, I knew four out of every five songs played on the radio. Fortunate enough for me, my parents listened to a wide variety of music ranging from jazz, reggae, rock to classical, so music is something that I have become accustomed to over the years.
I love good music and don’t particularly have a favorite genre of music as long as it’s creative and interesting, it for me. Over the years, I have seen musicians come and go; the good, the bad and the ugly. I have also observed that music in our generation, as popular as it may be, does not hold as much weight as the music of the old generation. Take for example a classic like Michael Jackson’s smooth criminal or the Beetles I want to hold your hand. You will notice that though this music was composed years ago, folks hear it and still want to sing along. A good number of songs in this generation fade almost as fast as they are released. Why is this so? What did the old generation know that we don’t? I think music like every other thing is losing its value. It has become more of a business than an art. In the older generation, music was expression, of feelings, emotions and personal realities of the musician. Like poetry, you could tell the music of the musician and their emotions just by listening to their music, just so captivating. In our new age world, where creativity has been neglected and striped of value all in the name of fortune and fame where the shots are called by greedy and ignorant producers who are not knowledgeable about god music or creativity. I can only hope and pray that the eyes of this generation would see things as they are and learn to value creativity and not just follow the hype. The hype is one of the reasons why most songs in our time fade so fast. Their popularity is built on the foundation of hype and aggressive marketing. A lot of times because of the fickleness of the crowd, the song gets dumped as soon as the next best thing comes along. There is sadly lacking classical songs in our time. As much as we want good music, all we can do is listen to the ones we have. Let’s encourage our young talents to make good music that will skip generations and still be universally accepted.
