Nigeria this afternoon at the Abuja National Stadium finished the first phase of qualifying with its 100% record after an impressive 4-1 win over the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone.
In a match the Super Eagles dominated from start to finish, returnee midfielder Christian Obodo opened scoring in the 21st minute before an own goal from captain Joseph Yobo 10 minutes later restored parity and thus ending the Eagles' run of five games without conceding.
However the lead was restored for Nigeria through Obinna Nsofor four minutes later and further goals from Osaze Odemwingie on the stroke of half time and a marvellous solo effort from Chidi Odiah gave the Eagles an impressive win.
There were occassions Nigeria could have made the domination count more on the scoreboard but a few saves from the Sierra Leonean keeper and two disallowed Ikechukwu Uche goals ensured scores stayed at 4-1 at full time.
The Super Eagles already booked its place in the final qualifying phase for the 2010 World and African Nations Cup while Sierra Leone needed a win to have a real chance of making that final phase.
The other group match in Malabo saw South Africa sneak into second spot on seven points with a 1-0 win over Equitorial Guinea though the 2010 World Cup hosts might miss out on one of eight best runners-up spots.
In other qualifiers around Africa, Ghana dramatically got top spot and qualification in Group Five from third place at the start of proceedings following a 3-0 win at home to Lesotho.
The result, coupled with a 1-0 win for Gabon over Libya meant Ghana qualify for the final qualifying phase while Gabon take second place and Libya fell from top spot to third and agonisingly miss out of qualification on goal difference.
In Group 11; one of two groups with only three countries, Togo boosted its qualification chances with a 6-0 demolition of Swaziland with Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor scoring four goals in that encounter.
The result put the Hawks in second place on six points behind Zambia who have now made the final qualifying phase; finishing top of the group with seven points while Swaziland finish bottom with four points.
Group Six witnessed a highly dramatic end as Senegal and Gambia missed out on a chance to claim top spot after a feisty 1-1 draw in Dakar while Algeria qualified for the final qualifying phase with a goalless draw in Monrovia against Liberia.
The results means Algeria finish top on 10 points while Gambia edge neighbours Senegal to second spot on goal difference with both West Africans finishing on nine points apiece.
Cameroun meanwhile finished Group One in style with a 5-0 thumping of Mauritius with Barcelona forward Samuel Eto'o getting a brace in that match to leave the Indomitable Lions on 16 points; the next best record at this stage after Nigeria.
Cote D'Ivoire also rounded up matters in Group Seven on a high with a comfortable 3-0 win over Madagascar with a brace from Boubacar Sanogo either side of half time and Salomon Kalou just past the hour mark in Abidjan.
The eight best runners-up will be determined finally after matches on Sunday though Gabon, Tunisia and Malawi in good stead to get the nod for the next round of qualifiers.
