The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps have honoured its personnel that were part of the Team Nigeria contingent to the 2008 Beijing Olympics held in September.
In his words, Commandant General of the Corps Dr. Ade Abolurin said of the 22 members of the athletics team, 12 came from the Corps while two of the three medals won were by Corps' members.
He went further to say the Corps is giving its sporting members the necessary backing needed to help them become champions, stating that the countries currently considered to be the champions are only so because of the support their athletes gain when infact they are not better than the Nigerian athletes.
It would be recalled that Olusoji Fasuba and Franca Idoko complained of the inability of their respective coaches and psycotherapists to make it to Beijing with them due to improper coordination thus affecting their performance at the Games.
The Corps so far has at least 27 athletes spread across various countries that have won several medals for Nigeria in international competitions and according to Dr. Abolurin, sport is given the necessary attention at the Corps and is a way of supporting President Umaru Yar'Adua's seven point agenda.
