Draws for the group stage of the UEFA Cup was held this afternoon with Nwankwo Kanu's Portsmouth pitched alongside six times European champions AC Milan in Group E.
Playing for the first time in European competition, Portsmouth will also face German club Wolfsburg, Heerenveen of Holland and Portuguese side SC Braga.
2006 and 2007 champions Sevilla finds itself in a tricky Group C which also has Italians Sampdoria, 2007 Bundesliga champions VfB Stuttgart, Everton's conquerors Standard Liege of Belgium and Serbian club Partizan Belgrade.
Another tough looking group is Group A which has Manchester City, Schalke 04 of Germany, Cup specialists Paris Saint-Germain, la Liga outfit Racing Santander and FC Twente of Holland.
Christian Obodo's Udinese have been drawn in Group D alongside Tottenham Hotspur that is bottom of the Premier League, Spartak Moscow, Dinamo Zagreb of Croatia and another Dutch side NEC Nijmegen.
Macaulay Chrisantus' Hamburg is in Group F along with Gabriel Agbonlahor's Aston Villa, yet another Dutch side AFC Ajax, Slavia Prague of Czech Republic and MSK Zilina from Slovakia.
In other groups, Benfica would be favourite to come out Group B with competition coming from Olympiacos Piraeus of Greece, Galatarasay of Turkey, Solomon Okoronkwo's former club Hertha Berlin and Ukrainian club Metalist Kharkiv.
Group G has Sunday Stephen's la Liga pacesetters Valencia as well as Joseph Akpala's Club Brugge playing for a place in the knock-out rounds with Norwegian champions Rosenborg B.K, Danish side FC Copenhagen and Saint-Etienne of France.
Finally in Group H, 2005 UEFA Cup champions CSKA Moscow face Dutch side Feyenoord, Spaniards Deportiva La Coruna, AS Nancy of France and Lech Poznan of Poland.
The group stage will see the teams play two home games and two away games only with the top three teams from each group qualifying for the knock-out stage where they will be joined by eight third placed clubs from the Champions League group stage.
FC Zenit St. Petersburg won the last edition earlier this year in May after a 2-0 win over Rangers of Scotland at the City of Manchester Stadium while this year's final; the last before morphing into the UEFA Europa League, will hold at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium in Turkey, home of Fenerbahce currently campaigning in the Champions League in Group G.
