The win puts Liverpool on 17 points behind Chelsea on goal difference after the Blues convincingly defeated Aston Villa 2-0 with first half goals from Joe Cole and Nicholas Anelka; off rebounds of efforts from himself and Michael Ballack by Brad Friedel.

However the result of the evening came at White Hart Lane where HUll City picked its second win from North London in as many weekends with a Geovanni free kick giving the Tigers a shock 1-0 win over bottom of the league Tottenham Hotspur and lifting the club to third on 14 points, one ahead of Arsenal and three behind Chelsea and Liverpool.
