Arsenal this afternoon survived what could have been a third shock Premier League defeat after only seven games following Francesc Fabregas' stoppage time equaliser at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland had taken the lead with four minutes of the match left through Grant Leadbitter only for Fabregas, with a header to salvage a point for the Gunners and leave them 13 points, a point behind Chelsea and Liverpool who both play on Sunday.
In other matches played, Wigan failed to turn possession into goals as Jeremie Aliadiere snatched all three points for Middlesbrough late at the JJB, ensuring Boro manager Gareth Southgate has won all three encounters with Steve Bruce of Wigan.
The other game of the afternoon saw only one goal as well as Roman Bednar won West Brom the three points at home to Fulham.
Arsenal with the draw could drop from third position should Aston Villa avoid defeat against Chelsea while West Ham on 12 points need a win at home to Bolton to go ahead of the Gunners.
Later on Saturday, champions Manchester United came out of Ewood Park with a 2-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers with goals in each half from Wes Brown and Wayne Rooney.
The win, the fourth in a row in all competitions, puts the Red Devils just two points behind Arsenal and three behind Chelsea and Liverpool, with a game in hand for United.
