Following a 2-2 draw in Goodison Park a fortnight ago, Everton could not come up with the goods as the Toffees were beaten 2-1 at Joseph Yobo's former club Standard Liege and fail to make the group stage of the UEFA Cup.
However, Yakubu Aiyegbeni's old club Portsmouth scraped through 4-2 on aggregate at Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes thanks to a Peter Crouch brace in extra time after Guimaraes had levelled the match at 2-2 on aggregate with a 2-0 scoreline after 90 minutes.
Other English clubs in the group stage with Pompey are Aston Villa which drew 1-1 with Litex Lovech but went through 4-2 on aggregate, Tottenham which drew 1-1 at Wisla Krakow and win 3-2 on aggregate as well as Manchester City that beat Omonia Nicosia 2-1 on the night and 4-2 on aggregate with the Cypriots' second leg goal coming from Oladimeji Alabi.
Other clubs through to the group stage are AC Milan with a 4-1 aggregate win over FC Zurich, Paris Saint-Germain that defeated Julius Aghahowa's Kayserispor 2-1 on aggregate after a goalless second leg in Paris.
Vincent Enyeama's Hapoel Tel-Aviv was knocked out by French side St. Etienne with Bafetimbi Gomis scoring a brace in the 2-1 win for St. Etienne while Ajax Amsterdam, Sevilla, Udinese, Valencia and Macaulay Chrisantus' Hamburg also made through.
