EFCC Press Release: The Federal government on Thursday said that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has grown to a robust and reputable national institution that now commands the respect and admiration of Nigerians and the international community.
(L-R) Commission Secretary, Emmanuel Akomaye, Board member, Harris Ogbole, Wole Olanipekun SAN, Executive Chairman, Farida Waziri, Justice Minister, Mike Kaase Aondoakaa SAN, Rotimi Jacobs, Niyi Banjo and Basil Anasoh at the EFCC retreat . Attorney- General and Minister of Justice, Chief Michael Aondoakaa stated this while declaring open the first-ever Management Retreat of the EFCC holding in Lagos. The Minister reviewed the performance of the EFCC since its inception over five years ago and delivered a verdict of excellence on its impact. “ By your hard work, commitment and personal sacrifices to this nation, the Commission has grown from a relatively small institution at birth some five years ago, to a robust and reputable national institution”, he noted. The Minster expressed delight with the improved image of Nigeria abroad and linked it with the “visible and evident” successes being recorded by the EFCC in its anti-corruption war. “Nigeria’s image has improved greatly . While Nigerians as a whole deserve commendation for this remarkable feat, it is necessary to place on record the contributions of the EFCC towards reversing this trend”, he said. He assured the EFCC and Nigerians of government’s unflinching commitments to the anti-graft war, a development which he linked with President Umaru Yar’adua’s re-positioning of anti-corruption agencies and his penchant for transparency as shown by his track record in Katsina state “where he practically demonstrated his zero tolerance for corruption by presiding over a corrupt free administration for eight years”. Chief Aondoakaa stressed that the war against corruption can be fought and won within the ambit of the rule of law and urged the EFCC to continue to operate by this tenet. By so doing, the Minister stated that the Commission will be demonstrating President Yar’adua’s commitment to the core values and respect for the dignity of the human person. He urged the nation’s development partners to continue to support the EFCC in realizing its set targets for the benefit of the whole nation and the international community. He also urged the Management of the EFCC to use the opportunity of its retreat to reflect on the Commission’s statutory mandate and challenges, appraise its past efforts , take stock of its achievements and adopt new strategies and methodologies that would enable it achieve its mission. Meanwhile, The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Chief (Mrs) Farida Waziri, in her response, reiterated her Commission’s commitment to the observance of the rule of law in fighting the anti- corruption war. She said that since the Federal Government has, for the first time, brought to the fore the emphasis on the rule of law, which is pivotal in its seven point agenda, it is imperative for the EFCC to re-align its operations to conform to current government’s policy. Besides, she stated that the war against corruption can be successfully fought and won by adhering to the tenets of the rule of law. Mrs Waziri said that though the EFCC had made so many landmark achievements since its inception, the Management Retreat would avail the Commission the opportunity to improve, sustain and consolidate on the gains so far recorded while at the same time bringing fresh impetus and challenges to the whole work of the Commission to enhance its performance. She reminded her staff of the huge expectations of Nigerians from the Commission and tasked them to be more diligent and painstaking in order to deliver on these expectations. She also reminded them of the need to build a strong, enduring professional and independent anti-corruption institution separated from any individual and group of persons. She challenged her staff to brainstorm in order to bring new initiatives and drives to bear on the work of the Commission in order to save the nation the scourge of corrupt practices. The Management Retreat commenced on Thursday and will be rounded off on Sunday. Femi Babafemi Head, Media & Strategy.
