CFR Cluj continued a dream debut in the UEFA Champions League with a goalless draw at home to last season's losing finalist Chelsea in Romania while Steven Gerrard scored his 100th Liverpool goal in the 3-1 win over PSV Eindhoven.
Cluj had come from behind to shock AS Roma 2-1 in the intimidating Olimpico and complemented that result by thwarting the forays of the Luiz Felipe Scolari's Blues who saw striker Didier Drogba stretched off with a suspected knee injury.
Chelsea however remain top of Group A with four points ahead of Cluj on goal difference and Roma with three points after the Italians came from a Yoann Gourcuff goal down to defeat Bordeaux 3-1 in France with Mirko Vucinic's equaliser and Julio Baptista scoring a winning brace for Roma.
Another shock played out in Group B when Inter Milan was held to a 1-1 draw at home by Werder Bremen, a result that leaves the Nerazzurri sharing top spot with debutantes Anorthosis Famagusta; the Cypriot side defeating bottom club Panathinaikos 3-1.
Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon now occupies second spot in Group C with three points ahead of Shakhtar Donetsk on goal difference after a 2-0 win at home to pointless FC Basel.
Barcelona meanwhile lead the group with maximum six points after coming from behind to beat Shakhtar 2-1 in Ukraine with two goals in the last three minutes from substitute Lionel Messi.
Finally in Group D, Atletico Madrid lead with six points after a well earned 2-1 win at home to Taye Taiwo's Olypique Marseille with Sergio Aguero and Raul Garcia's strikes either side of Mamadou Niang's goal for Marseille.
Liverpool follow the Spaniards on goal difference after defeating PSV 3-1 with goals from Dirk Kuyt, Robbie Keane with his first for Liverpool since signing from Tottenham and captain Gerrard with a trademark freekick 12 minutes from time.
The next round of matches in the Champions League takes place in the midweek of October 21 with the peak of Day Three being the reunion of Fernando Torres with his former club Atletico Madrid.
