The nightmare of losing to Hull City was laid to rest with a sparkling Arsenal display in the 4-0 thrashing of FC Porto with a brace each from Robin van Persie and Emmanuel Adebayor.

Porto had began the match the better side, hitting the crossbar and forcing Manuel Almunia to duty in the opening minutes but van Persie cooled nerves at the Emirates with a slid-in effort from Adebayor's pass in the 31st minute.

The Dutchman returned the favour from his corner kick headed in off the crossbar by Adebayor in the 40th minute before his individual effort made it 3-0 three minutes into the second half.

Samir Nasri and Francesc Fabregas could have extended Arsenal's lead but it was Adebayor that completed the rout on 70 minutes from the penalty spot after substitute Nicklas Bendtner was brought down in the area.

The win puts Arsenal on top of Group G with four points while Porto is second with three and Dynamo Kyiv is third following a goalless draw in Turkey against Fenerbahçe SK that stay bottom of the group with one point.

Champions Manchester United eased to the top of Group E on four points with a 3-0 win away to Danish club Aalborg with goals from Wayne Rooney and new signing Dimitar Berbabtov who hit an eyecatching brace in the second half.

However, a good night for the champions was dented by the injuries sustained by midfielder Paul Scholes and 18 year old Brazilian right back Rafael who had come in for Gary Neville.

Villarreal follow the Red Devils in second place on goal difference after edging Celtic to a lone goal win in Spain courtesy of Brazilian born midfielder Marcos Senna with a well taken free kick just after the hour mark.

In Group F, Bayern Munich poor form continued with a 1-1 draw at home to Olympique Lyon though the Bavarians top the group with four points ahead of Lyon and Fiorentina which played a disappointing goalless draw at home to Steaua Bucharest.

Finally from Group H, Belarusian club BATE Borisov was 2-0 after just 23 minutes against Juventus but a brace from Vincenzo Iaquinta in the final quarter of the first half slavaged a point for the 1996 champions.
