Real Madrid had Iker Casillas to thank in the Petrovsky Stadium as he pulled off a number of saves to deny Zenit St. Petersburg and help the nine times European champions to a 2-1 win in Group H.
Tomas Hubocan's early own goal to give Real the lead set the tone for a thrilling encounter which saw Brazilian striker Danny equalise on the 25th minute only for Ruud van Nistelrooy to restore the visitors' lead six minutes later.
Zenit however came out stronger in the second half and had chances to get an equaliser with Andrei Arshavin forcing a good save from Casillas before driving a shot off the Real post.
The Russian international, subject of unsuccessful protracted transfer speculations, showed just what the fuss was about in the closing stages with a nice little piece of skill to lose two Real players and find Danny whose goal-bound shot agonisingly deflected off Pepe.
The win puts Real on top of Group H with a maximum six points from two games while Juventus stay second with three points ahead of the Italian club's trip to Belarusian debutantes BATE Borisov.
