Real Madrid and Barcelona needed late goals to secure respective 2-1 wins in their la Liga matches played while Villarreal replaced Valencia at the top of the table in the meantime.
Real Madrid had taken the lead through a Gabriel Heinze header early in the first half at Real Betis whose best chance in the half came through Achile Emana whose shot was parried onto the post by Iker Cassilas.
Madrid defender Marcelo was sent off for a foul in the area and Sergio Garcia equalised for the home side on the 54th minute off a rebound after Cassilas had saved his initial penalty kick.
Garcia himself would get himself sent off after a foul on Royston Drenthe before Ruud van Nistelrooy secured the three points with a 90th minute strike.
The win puts the champions in second place on 12 points behind Villarreal on 13. The Yellow Submarines lead after Giuseppe Rossi's goal gave it a 1-0 win at Sporting Gijon.
Barcelona meanwhile rise to third on 10 points with a dramatic 2-1 win at city rivals Espanyol that took the lead in the 20th minute before crowd trouble forced the encounter to be suspended 10 minutes.
However Thierry Henry poked home with 14 minutes to go before a controversial penalty deep in stoppage time was converted by Lionel Messi.
The bulk of la Liga matches will be played on Sunday with Valencia primed to regain top spot at home to Deportivo la Coruna while Atletico Madrid visit Sevilla and Ik Uche's Getafe travel to play Blibao.
Meanwhile in the Serie A, injury plagued Juventus was held to a goalless draw at Sampdoria, missing the chance to reclaim top spot from Inter Milan that face AC Milan in the highlight of the weekend in Italy.
