Newcastle United continued its downward slide in the Premier League as Blackburn Rovers dealt the Magpies a 2-1 home defeat, dropping Newcastle into the relegation zone.
Meanwhile Cristiano Ronaldo scored from the penalty spot for Manchester United as the champions got a 2-0 win over Lancashire rivals Bolton Wanderers; lifting the Red Devils up to eighth with eight points.
Chelsea however lead the Red Devils by six points following a 2-0 win away at Seyi Olofinjana's Stoke City with goals in both halves from Jose Bosingwa and Nicholas Anelka.
The Blues now lead the league with 14 points ahead of Liverpool on goal difference while Gabriel Agbonlahor's Aston Villa is third in the meantime after coming from a goal down to defeat Sunderland 2-1.
Other results from this afternoon had Middlesbrough lose 1-0 at home to West Bromwich-Albion and West Ham United get a 2-1 win away at London neighbours Fulham that was without Dickson Etuhu.
