A second half brace from record signing Fernando Torres gave Liverpool a 2-0 victory over neighbours Everton in the Merseyside derby, sending the Reds to the top of the Premier League for a few hours on 14 points.
After a dull first half which spilled into the opening minutes of the second half, Liverpool finally broke the deadlock on the hour mark with Robbie Keane finding Torres to strike home.
The game sparked into more life three minutes later with Torres again finding the back of the net off an attempted clearance from the Everton defence before El-Nino was denied a hattrick five minutes after with three Liverpool players offside.
Captain Steven Gerrard almost made it 3-0 late on with a 25 yard drive well saved by Tim Howard while substitute Louis Saha had a shot come off the post on a day to forget for the Toffees that had midfielder Tim Cahill sent off for a challenge on Xabi Alonso.
The loss leaves Everton without a point from three home matches played in the Premier League this season while Liverpool now look forward to a home tie against Dutch side PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday. Quote this article on your site | Views: 118 | Print | E-mail
