AC Milan won its third consecutive game in all competitions and second in the league with a hard fought 2-1 victory away to Reggina while city rivals and Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan maintained top spot and Juventus faltered.
The win for Milan lifts the Rossoneri further up the table to ninth on seven points, three points behind Inter that could only muster a 1-0 win over newly promoted Lecce with Obinna Nsofor not even making the Inter bench.
SS Lazio is now second on nine points, one point behind Inter after a 3-0 bashing of Fiorentina with second half goals from Stefano Mauri, Goran Pandev and Siviglia.
Lazio replaced Juventus who slipped down to fifth on eight points after the injury ravaged club was held to a 1-1 draw at home to Catania and was also leapfrogged by Atalanta on nine points courtesy of its 1-0 win over Cagliari.
In other games, Udinese without Christian Obodo eased 3-0 past its hosts Bologna while AS Roma continued to have a downward slide in form with a 3-1 defeat at Genoa.
In Spain, Real Madrid went one better than Barcelona by defeating newly promoted Sporting Gijon 7-1; Barcelona won the club 6-1 over the weekend, to rise to second with nine points behind Villarreal that defeated Racing Santander 2-0. The Yellow Submarines have 10 points.
Barcelona meanwhile survived a scare with a 3-2 win over Real Betis with Eidur Gudjohnsen getting a late winner for the Catalans after Betis had cancelled out two first half strikes from Samuel Eto'o.
The win put Barca in fifth spot on seven points, a point behind fourth placed Sevilla that defeated former leaders Espanyol 2-0 and two points behind third placed Atletico Madrid that beat Ik Uche's Getafe 2-1.
In France, Cup specialists Paris Saint-Germain beat Sani Kaita's Monaco 1-0 to make the next round of the Coupe de la Ligue (French League Cup) which it won last season.
Taye Taiwo's Olympique Marseille however fell by the same score away at Rabiu Afolabi's Sochaux while Onyekachi Apam's OGC Nice defeated lower league Boulogne 3-1.
